Do you know anyone that owns a Cobra rd?
How about it? Anyone know of someone that uses a Cobra rd and plans on sticking w/ it?

Nope. I am entertaining the idea of buying a new one just to see how bad, or good, they really are. Like a S-XRS 9970G or the "top shelf" cobra dashmount.

Re: Do you know anyone that owns a Cobra rd?
Well I fulfilled my curiosity, sort of. I found an XRS 9845 on CL (hope it's OK to mention this name) for 40 clams. It is supposedly brand new and never plugged in. This one has the "cool blue display". 15 band (LOFL) ultra this and that, everything but a hummer.
After driving for 20 minutes I quickly realised that there is no way I could ever put my faith in a cobra. I am comparing it to my STi, which is not even fair but oh well. It has band confusion issues (X and K) and thrillingly short Ka detection. The bad thing is this rd is going to be my frontline unit for a couple of weeks as my wife's (MY) beloved S7 X50 blue is throwing the service required message and will be sent in for repair. I will lend my wife my STi in the interim as she needs an rd way more than I do. Her cop vision is bad and I know she will get cited without one. I still got my eyes, cb and my cobra to protect me. Please say a prayer.
Oh, I got shot, with an ultralyte, ny NYSP and the cobra alerted to an LTI 20/20. I laughed my sack off when it alerted correctly!

2 people I used to work with had Cobras. I told them about the V1, but neither listened as they say their Cobras saved them from a few tickets.

How many did it not save them from.
Most don't drive fast enough to get a ticket in the first place so they think it saves them.

I was surprised as well! I run my rd's on the dash of my truck and I usually do know if I've been targeted with lidar. Need LI's.... Need LI's.category4 wrote:Wow I would have bet it never would have alerted to a lidar shot!!!

I ran them for years..
I ran cobra's for years. In my opinion they aren't horrid units like all on another forum make them out to be. Are they the greatest thing to a slice of bread, by all means heck no! But if I had to choose between a brick of an RMR or a cobra, i'd choose cobra. It saved me from many tickets. Tickets that my x-50 did let me down on. Then again the technology has advanced since then majorly, and now if your being owned with an x-50 chances are swell that a cobra would earn you a hefty fine due to no advance warning.
This is besides the point that they leak something horrible. "Electronic Leakage."

I know the older units leak but I'm not so sure about the new ones?

Make sure when sending in your wife's X50 that Steve Kanny works on the unit. I have had problems when Salmon worked on my X50 and didn't have near the detection of when Steve worked on it. Make sure you put Attn:Steve or you will be sorry. pm me for more

Damn!!!! Salmon is the one who fixed it. I will say that it still is an awesome unit. Excellent 35.5 detection.

Re: Do you know anyone that owns a Cobra rd?
Older x and k band Cobras that look like a metal box, are great units. The Cobra 3160 Micro unit from 1987 is also a great unit. Once the invention of ka band, Cobra rd's went way down hill. I find it interesting that I can take a Cobra rd and do some radar testing where it sometimes will not even alert, but the V1,Beltronics,Escort, and Whistler rd's alert almost every time. This shows me a lot about Cobra and ka band.
