Ex-San Antonio Police Officer Sentenced to 15 Years in Fatal Crash That Killed Colleague
SAN ANTONIO TX-- On Wednesday, a jury sentenced former San Antonio police Officer David Seaton in the death of a fellow officer in a 2008 accident.
Seaton was found guilty on Monday of one count manslaughter and one count aggravated assault by a peace officer in the death of Officer Robert Davis.
A jury sentenced Seaton to 15 years for the manslaughter charge and 10 years for aggravated assault charge. Served concurrently, Seaton will spend 15 years behind bars.
On Nov. 28, 2008, he was involved in a traffic crash at Potranco Road and Hunt Lane, investigators said.
According to testimony, Seaton was going more than 100 mph responding to a shoplifting call. Davis, 26, was clearing the scene of a minor wreck at the intersection.
Investigators said Seaton crashed into a car that was making a left turn onto Hunt Lane and then careened into Davis. Davis was critically injured and died several days later in the hospital.
The courtroom on Wednesday was very tense as the judge read the punishment to a room full of people.
There was crying from one side of the courtroom where Seaton's family was and silence when the baliffs came to handcuff Seaton and take him away.
Even though the accident itself happened on Nov. 28, Davis died on was Dec. 1, making Wednesday the two-year anniversary of his death.
Today is the two year anniversary of Robert's passing, said Davis widow, Simona Davis. I just want to thank the jury for giving him justice today on his two year anniversary. Simona Davis also said she was satisfied with the sentence.
Calling the punishment harsh and undeserved, Seatons family members said they were surprised by the outcome.
I'm heartbroken that my brother is being made an example out of, said Seatons sister, Rosedelee Seaton. The prosecutor said send a message, and he's definitely making an example out of my brother."
Seaton has 30 days to make an appeal.
